To ensure compliance when selling radio products internationally, it’s essential to understand that each country may require its own unique certifications. The following certifications are among the most commonly needed; however, you should verify specific requirements for each target country to ensure full compliance.

Key Radio Certifications by Region

  • CE (Conformité Européenne): Required for products sold within the European Economic Area (EEA). The CE mark indicates conformity with health, safety, and environmental protection standards for products sold within Europe.
  • UKCA (UK Conformity Assessed): Required for products sold in the United Kingdom. This certification confirms that the product meets applicable UK regulations and standards.
  • FCC (Federal Communications Commission): Mandatory for products sold in the United States. The FCC mark demonstrates that the product complies with U.S. regulations for electronic emissions and radio frequency interference.
  • ISED (Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada): Required for products sold in Canada. This certification ensures compliance with Canadian radio frequency and interference regulations.
  • TELEC (Telecom Engineering Center): Required for products sold in Japan. TELEC certification confirms compliance with Japan’s Radio Law and technical standards for wireless devices.

Some of the radio modules we provide are pre-certified, meaning they have already undergone the necessary certification process. If you use a pre-certified module with the same radio parameters, no additional certification is needed.

For example, the Würth Ophelia III and Proteus III ICs are pre-certified with the required radio parameters. These modules can be used without further certification by submitting a Declaration of Identity (DOI). More information is available under the specific module sections.

Used Radio Protocols:

  • BLE LE 1MBit and 2 MBit
  • Shockburst 1MBit (NRF_ESB_BITRATE_1MBPS_BLE) and 2MBit (NRF_ESB_BITRATE_2MBPS_BLE)

Certificate the Radio using Nordics Direct Test Mode (DTM)

Using this testmode the radio lab can do the necessary measurements they need. For this, two pins on the module must be configured as UART Rx and UART Tx pins. These should be connected to a PC via a COM port connection, which can be done using an FTDI Adapter (USB to UART).

To find the firmware for the Vision Controller for the DTM, go to Radio -> Modules and select the correct module. The pins used for UART communication are defined there.

Once you have the necessary components, you’ll need to install the Nordic nRF Connect for Desktop application. You can download it from the following link: Download nRF Connect for Desktop

After downloading, open the application. Here, you can install additional components as needed. Follow the installation guide here: Installing Apps in nRF Connect

Next, select DTM (Direct Test Mode) and install the DTM tool. An overview of the tool can be found here: DTM Overview

For detailed instructions on how to use the DTM tool, refer to this guide: How to Use DTM Tool
